The prearranged form is divided into four parts; stances, blocks, punches and kicks. This prearranged form, or Kata, is a choreographed fight sequence which incorporates combinations of defensive and offensive skills and is intended to develop instinctive actions and reactions.

The self defense techniques are divided into three parts; escape setup and throw. The escape portion of each technique is the most important as it is designed to either immediately end or to neutralize the encounter. If the student elects to immediately end the encounter by employing the full power aspects of the escape portion of the technique, the attacker would be knocked to the ground making the setup and throw unnecessary.

If the student elects to neutralize the encounter by employing only stun power at the escape portion of the technique, the attacker’s aggression would be neutralized allowing the setup portion of the technique to redirect the attacker’s weight, strength and balance into the throw.

Altrenatively, the student could elect to employ minimal stun power at the escape portion of the technique, intending to cause the attacker to end their aggressiveness. If the attacker’s aggressiveness is ended, the student could choose to show compassion toward the attacker and change the entire mood of the encounter. If the attacker’s aggressiveness is not ended the student could escalate the power as deemed necessary.

REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT AS STRINGENT AS THEY ONCE WERE
*    “Shimobe” Barr’s requirement for promotion above 3rd degree Black belt regarding establishing and/or overseeing training centers were NOT definitively specified. Records indicate that since being awarded 3rd degree Black belt he has established and / or overseen more than 35 training centers to date.  That would equate to 5 new training centers per Black belt level above 3rd degree Black belt.

**   Shimobe Barr’s requirement for promotion above 3rd degree Black belt regarding establishing new Black belts was set at 10 new Black belts at each level above 3rd degree Black belt. The 10 Black belts included those promoted by the Board of Examiners through training centers instructed by or overseen by JtBarr.  To date there have been more than 100 promotions to Black belt credited to JtBarr’s instruction or supervision.

NOTE:  The “5 new Black belts” requirement includes lower-ranked Black belts promoted at training centers operated by the candidate seeking advanced rank, as well as lower-ranked Black belts promoted at training centers being overseen by the candidate seeking advanced rank.
