Informal bowing is performed when entering or exiting the training area.  

               NOTE: Informal bowing may be performed in street clothes while holding
                          personal possessions such as: the Aikido uniform (aikidogi), gym
                          bag, coat or jacket, training equipment, etc. 

When NOT holding personal possessions – stand facing the center of the training area (Fig. 1) with your feet together – back straight – eyes looking straight ahead – arms straight down at your sides – fists clenched, palms toward your thighs. [See – “How to clench the fist“.] 

Briefly bend forward form the waist (Fig. 2) – eyes looking straight ahead – forearms parallel to the ground – fists clenched, palms toward each other 

then 

return to erect posture (Fig. 3) – back straight – eyes looking straight ahead – arms straight down at your sides – fists clenched, palms toward your thighs.

Informal Bowing is also performed during the training session:
     at the beginning and the end of practice with a partner or partners.
     at the beginning and the end of sparring with a partner or partners.
     at the beginning and the end of communication with the instructor.
     at the beginning and the end of testing for promotion.
